Today was an exciting day in our home: The First Day of School
My boys dressed in their new school clothes, grabbed their bookbags filled with new supplies, and headed off to new beginnings.
I then, anxious to get back to my own school year routine, grabbed a cup of coffee and a stack of new picture books from my local librarian.
I never made it past the first title, The Junkyard Wonders by Patricia Polacco. Beginning with the first day of school, the story describes a year spent in a very special class with an extraordinary teacher and her extraordinary students.
This book encompasses so many of the emotions we experience as school-age children.
For teachers, it is a perfect opportunity to encourage your students to celebrate their differences and the wonder that lies within each one. As you begin this school year, I strongly recommend this book, not only as an inspiring read aloud, but also to serve as a personal reminder of the potential within each child sitting in your classroom.
