Happy Birthday, Eric Carle!

With over 33 million copies sold in more than 50 languages, The Very Hungry Caterpillar is certainly his best-known book.  But it all started when Bill Martin, Jr. needed illustrations for Brown Bear, Brown Bear, What Do You See?.

How many kids have learned to read by practicing the repetitive verses from the pages of Eric Carle?  I remember my own children beaming as they recognized the words and first realized those words matched the pictures and their predictions.

Thank you, Mr. Carle for connecting learning to read with so much fun!

Today, Eric Carle’s illustrations can be found on bike helmets, greeting cards, fabrics, and even bottles of sunscreen.  How cool is that?

To celebrate his birthday, check out his website at www.eric-carle.com

There, you’ll find a link to his blog, biography, games, and even a bulletin board where teachers share ideas using his books in the classroom.   Happy birthday, Mr. Carle–Enjoy your day!
