Words Under Water

What’s your muse?  For me, it seems to be water–any water pretty much anywhere–fishing on a lake, watching ocean waves crash onto the shore, sitting on a patio beside a cascading water fountain.

This weekend my writing inspiration came while floating on a cheap plastic toy in an inflatable kiddie pool!

I began thinking of how we expect our kids to suddenly WRITE while sitting in a desk confined to the four walls of a classroom.  Just like us, kids need time for writing inspiration.

Yes, I know.  Standardized testings can’t be given under the oak tree on the playground.  But maybe we could allow our students other opportunities throughout the rest of the year to be inspired by the natural world.  Then, when times come for desktop writing, our students will be able to pull from the inspiration already gathered in their memories.
