Here Comes Peter Cottontail

The song that accompanies this Easter TV classic is an all familiar tune for me–so much so, that I find myself singing it all year long!

But have you ever wondered about the story behind the story?  This movie was actually based on a novel by Priscilla and Otto Friedrich entitled The Easter Bunny That Overslept.  However, the main character’s name comes from Thornton Burgess who co-wrote the special.

Who is the real Peter Cottontail?  Though today he’s synonymous with the Easter Bunny, Peter Cottontail was first introduced by Burgess in a series of bedtime stories about Old Mother West and her animal neighbors–like Grandfather Frog, Jimmy Skunk, and Bobby Raccoon.

Old Mother West Wind, his first book published in 1910, was only the beginning for this master storyteller.  Burgess went on to write 170 books and 15,000 stories for columns and newspapers.

His beloved Peter Cottontail still delights both young and old today.
