Curl Up With a Great Book!

While many teachers and students dreaded the first day back after the winter break, I always looked forward to it.  Why?  Great read-alouds!  For some reason I love the winter picture books.  They make me want to curl up in a quilt and drink hot cocoa.  Take this opportunity to share the comforts of a great book on a cold wintry day.

Instead of dreading the first week back, make it a Winter Celebration!  Pull out great snow-themed books and enjoy your time indoors.  Over the next few days I’ll be sharing some of my favorite snowy read alouds along with great writing prompts to get you and your students back into the swing of things.

Let’s start with a classic: The Snowy Day by Ezra Jack Keats

This is a great one to read first because it shares some of the fun experiences a kid can have in the snow.

After reading, lead a discussion about the fun of a snowy day.  Brainstorm some of these and record them on chart paper.  Display the ideas so that students can use them throughout the winter as writing prompts.
