The Rough-Face Girl by Rafe Martin

To wrap us David Shannon’s B-day Week I had to mention this favorite.  Written by Rafe Martin, The Rough-Face Girl is the powerful story of Cinderella, set on the shores of Lake Ontario.  Scarred from the flames she was forced to feed, the Rough-Face Girl lives a life of abuse until her encounter with the Invisible Being.

Shannon’s illustrations are remarkable.  Every time I read this aloud, my students gasped as I turned to a certain page.  It’s the illustration of the Invisible Being revealed through the eyes of the Rough-Face Girl.  Beautiful.

Make sure to include this read-aloud in your Cinderella picks.  It’s a must-have for any picture book lover.

So that’s a wrap for this special David Shannon B-Day Week Happy Birthday, David!
