A Bad Case of Stripes by David Shannon

Here’s another great read-aloud by David Shannon.

A Bad Case of Stripes deals with the universal theme of fitting in.  Everyone wants to feel included and sometimes we go to great extremes to be a part of the group.

In this story, Camilla wants to impress her schoolmates and keeps her love for lima beans to herself because everyone else hates them.

The story is a humorous way to start a discussion with kids about a pretty serious subject.  Great story for topics such as bullying as well.

Teaching Idea:  After reading this one, ask the students to think of something they love to eat or do.  Allow them time to draw a picture of themselves with a Bad Case of. . . and display their illustrations to celebrate everyone’s differences.
