The Writer’s Toolbox

Live Writing: Breathing Life into Your Words by Ralph Fletcher is a great book for leading a writer’s workshop in the classroom.  The book is based on the idea that every writer pulls from his/her toolbox filled with inspirations from readings, everyday observations, daily writing practice, and learning from other writers.

I took this concept literally.  I pulled an old red metal toolbox from my husband’s shed, cleaned it up, and added it to a work station in our classroom.  Inside, the students found extra pencils, markers, erasers, etc.  Throughout the year the metal toolbox served as a visual reminder of all the tools of the trade.
