Once There Was a Bull. . .(frog)

Theme: Compound Words

Need a fun idea for teaching compound words?  This book is a great start.

Once There Was a Bull. . . (frog) by Rick Walton takes you on a surprising bullfrog adventure.

The great thing about this book is its page-turning quality.  Kids enjoy guessing the next word and, of course, when you turn the page the word becomes a compound word.

Greg Hally also did an excellent job with illustrations.  You’ll need to see this one.

Teaching Idea:  Read the book and allow kids to enjoy guessing the next word.  Chart the compound words found in the story then allow kids to brainstorm and chart other compound words to add to the list.

This Flip-Book is a great Follow-Up activity.

Jan Brett has a great web page of Compound Words.  Click her book image to visit.
