Roses are Pink, Your Feet Really Stink

Roses are Pink, Your Feet Really Stink by Diane deGroat

Gilbert must think of nice things to say about each of his classmates, even those who aren’t so nice.  Your students will certainly be able to relate to this fun read aloud.

Theme: Friendship

Teaching Idea: Writing a Letter

Materials Needed: Stationery, paper strips with each child’s name, paper bag

Procedure:  After reading this story, lead a discussion on how the characters felt when they read their Valentines.  Compare the differences between how they felt when they read nice comments and how the bad comments made them feel.

Students choose a name of a classmate from the bag .  Review parts of a letter.  Students write a friendly letter to the classmate they chose.  Allow each student to choose stationery to write the letter.  You may suggest writing a rough draft on scratch paper first.
